Engineering education in Korea has expanded over the last few decades and the share of tertiary graduates with engineering majors is much higher than the OECD average. However, relatively little is known about the quality of engineering education in Korea. The purpose of this study is to assess engineering major students’ competencies in mathematics, physics, critical thinking, and quantitative literacy among 1,011 college students from seven universities in Korea. Then we compare Korean students’ skill levels and gains to those of Chinese and Russian students. We find that there are significant variations on students’ competencies within seven Korean universities. Second, Korean students’ skill levels on average are lower than those of Chinese students but are higher than those of Russian students. We also report that the skill gains measured by comparing juniors to freshmen. The results show that Korean students are actually losing their skills in mathematics and physics over years, which is similar to Chinese students’ pattern.-
