Abstract

Automation creates both winners and losers. By examining establishment-level panel data, we examine how a labor union affects automation's effects on the shares of female and different types of workers. Although automation can increase new hires, the presence of labor unions neutralizes these effects. Unions appear to reduce the hiring of female workers and increase the share of production workers.
