The Effect of Subway Openings on Air Quality

Abstract

This paper examines the effect of urban rail transport on air quality using the opening of the second subway line in the South Korean metropolitan city of Daegu. Exploiting the discrete increase in subway ridership on the date of opening, I apply a regression discontinuity design to data on the hourly level of the air pollutants. My results show that the opening of a new subway line substantially reduced carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, air pollutants primarily from road transport.

본 논문은 대구 지하철 2호선 개통을 이용하여 지하철 개통이 도심대기의 질에 미치는 영향에 대하여 분석한다. 대구 지하철 2호선 개통 일, 전일에 비해 지하철 승객이 크게 증가하였다는 사실을 바탕으로 회귀단절모형(Regression discontinuity design)를 분석에 이용하여 대기오염물의 시간대별 관측 값이 지하철 개통 시점에 어떻게 변화하였는지를 분석하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 본 논문을 신규 지하철노선의 개통으로 일산화탄소, 이산화질소 등 주로 도로교통에 의해 발생하는 대기 오염물질이 감소하였음을 확인하였다.
