행복의 국가 간 비교분석: 핀란드와 일본 사례를 중심으로

Abstract

Easterlin 패러독스는 소득이 반드시 행복 증진으로 이어지지 않음을 보여주었다. 본 연구는 이점에 착안하여 소득 수준은 비슷하지만 행복 수준에서 큰 차이를 보이는 핀란드와 일본을 대상으로 어떤 요인들이 핀란드를 일본에 비해 더 행복하게 만드는지 탐구하였다. 국가 간 사례 분석은 핀란드와 일본 간에 존재하는 가치와 문화, 신뢰와 공동체, 교육, 기회균등과 같은 사회적 맥락의 차이에 주목하였다. 행복 결정요인으로서 경제적 정치적 맥락을 상당 부분 공유하고 있는 두 나라의 행복 수준 차이는 결국 이러한 사회적 맥락의 차이에 의해 결정된다고 할 수 있다.

Easterlin Paradox shows that income and wealth do not necessarily bring happiness. Finland and Japan are cases in point. Although they are close with respect to per capita income, Finns are much happier than Japanese. This study investigates factors that drive the two countries diverge. In particular, this study pays particular attention to social context, such as value and culture, trust and communicy, education, and equal opportunity. The analysis shows that the difference between the two countries is indeed attributable to the difference in social context.
