This report compares three recent cases of foreign investment in Korean banks; (1) Kookmin Bank (minority investor for portfolio management); (2) Korea First Bank (51: 49 joint venture with Korean government); (3) Korea Exchange Bank (wholly owned subsidiary). The three cases demonstrate several modes of entry in banks; joint ventures, portfolios, and subsidiaries. The report will observe how the mode of entry affects both management and exit strategies. Considering such variables, strategic approach is highly recommended when deciding on a particular mode of entry.
